Over the past weeks, increasing drone and missile attacks on commercial vessels have been reported in the Bab al-Mandab Straight, the entry to the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aden. Allegedly a spill-over effect of the Israel/Gaza conflict, Houthi rebels in Yemen started targeting all vessels calling at Israel ports. However, this has now escalated to include all vessels in the area. Among the attacked ships are a Norwegian tanker and a Maersk container vessel.

As a result of the Houthi threat in the Red Sea we already see an increase in rates, longer transportation times and cancellations of voyages to Israel.

A rate increase that has already been published and currently estimated additions to the original cost of about $400-$700 per container.

The details of the changes in routes vary from company to company and are not final, the information that are published so far: –

ZIM + MAERSK
Direct sailing from the Fareast to Israel & from Israel , will not sail through the Red Sea, the vessels will bypass the red sea via Cape of Good Hope, South Africa and extend the sailing route by 20 days.

The total sailing time is about 45 days from the main ports in the Fareast.
**In addition, ZIM announced the suspension of their service from India to Israel.

MSC

The route from the Fareast to Israel will be transshipped  via the port of Gioia Taro Italy , the additional arrival time to Israel is about 20 days.
Total sailing days about 40 to 45 days.

ONE/YML

Each voyage will be examined separately.
The upcoming voyage will take place with cargo through Turkey which will extend the voyage time to Israel by about 22 days.
Currently December sailings have been canceled – the first vessel is expected to sail – on January 24

EVERGREEN / OOCL / HAPAG LLOYD / COSCO
suspended its services from the Fareast to Israel until further notice.
The updates received from the shipping lines keep changing based on the from day to day.

DSV customer service teams are here to support and provide the best options.

**Despite the situation DSV has solutions from the Fareast that combine transport by sea to the port of Jebel Ali in Dubai and from there continue by truck to cross the Jordan at the Sheikh Hussein Bridge.
